Clayton bars have a split personality, and I respect that. One night you’re doing a pepperoncini vodka shot at The Cardinal, the next you’re splitting buffalo tenders off a nine-foot pool table at Cleveland Draft House.

I have personally lost a Tuesday to the Cardinal’s karaoke machine, which proves the point. But the range extends further than beer-soaked dives, covering made-to-order breakfasts at the Magnolia Inn and sugar-free sodas at, of all places, Sodabox.

My liver and my planner are both filing complaints, but I mapped the whole mess out anyway. Start arguing with my rankings.

Easy to lose track of time

The Cardinal Bar is the kind of place where you lose track of time without meaning to. I stopped in for one drink, and three hours later I was still there, nursing a pepperoncini vodka that sounded gimmicky but actually worked. The live music was loud enough to feel but not so loud that I couldn't talk. Bartenders remembered my name by the second round, which says something. Late-night hot dogs hit the spot after a few rounds, too. If you're looking for a no-fuss, friendly spot to while away an evening, this is it. Just don't plan on leaving early.

I walked into 9BAR Coffeehouse on a whim and ended up staying for two hours. The coffee is smooth, no bitter aftertaste, and the food is surprisingly fresh for a café. The space itself is new and bright, with plenty of cozy nooks to settle into. I grabbed a seat by the window and watched the street go by. Staff were patient when I couldn't decide between a latte and a cold brew. The place has a calm, relaxing vibe that makes it easy to linger. If you need a quiet afternoon with good caffeine, this is your spot.

The Healthy Place is exactly what it sounds like, but it doesn't sacrifice flavor for nutrition. The staff greeted me with a smile and helped me pick out a smoothie. My kids loved theirs, too, which is a win in my book. Everything is low sugar and low calorie, but you wouldn't know it from the taste. The peanut butter cookie is a standout, and I grabbed a few to go. It's a bright, welcoming spot that makes healthy eating feel easy. I'll be back, probably more often than I should.

Craft Public House covers all the bases. The menu is huge, and the portions are generous, so come hungry. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, and it was big enough to take half home. The desserts are ridiculous in the best way. If you're into sports, there are TVs everywhere, so you won't miss a game. They also have a solid list of local craft beers. Service was attentive and quick, even on a busy night. There's bar seating up front and family tables in the back, so it works for different crowds. Solid all around.

Longleaf Libations Mobile Bar brings the party to you, which is a relief when you don't want to deal with venue logistics. They handle all the ABC permits, so you don't have to worry about that. The bartender was professional, clearly knew his stuff, and whipped up custom cocktails based on what we liked. He was also a good conversationalist, which helped the vibe. Setup was punctual and polished, nothing out of place. If you're planning an event, this is a stress-free option. I'd hire them again in a heartbeat.

Desi Tavern is a hidden gem for Indian food, though it's not really hidden if you know what to look for. The butter chicken is rich and flavorful, and the naan comes out soft and warm. The okra is perfectly seasoned, not mushy at all. Kalyan, who served us, was attentive without being intrusive, and he made good recommendations. The space is casual and comfortable. I left full and happy. This is the kind of place that makes you want to come back with friends. Definitely worth a visit.

Sodabox is a surprising find for anyone who's watching their sugar intake. The entire menu is sugar-free, which is rare. I tried a few of their sodas, and they actually taste like the real thing. The staff were patient with me as I customized my drink, letting me mix flavors until I got it right. They also have homemade cookies that are sugar-free but still delicious, which feels like magic. It's a small, unpretentious spot that does one thing well. If you're diabetic or just cutting back, this is a must-visit.

Municipal Park is the place to go on a hot day. The splash pad is the main draw, and it does not disappoint. My kids spent hours running through the water while I sat on a bench and actually cooled off. There's a small playground nearby, though it lacks slides, so my youngest was a little disappointed. But the water feature more than made up for it. It's a great, free way to burn off energy. Just bring sunscreen and a towel. I'd recommend it for any parent looking to tire out their kids.

Fit4life Health Clubs is a straightforward gym that gets the basics right. The staff are friendly and actually helpful, which is rarer than you'd think. There's a good variety of equipment, so you can do cardio, weights, or functional training without waiting too long. The trainers are knowledgeable and encouraging, not the type to yell at you. They also explain pricing clearly, no hidden fees, which I appreciated. It's not a flashy place, but it's solid. I've been going for a few weeks now and have no complaints.

Church Spirits & Cocktails of Clayton is a bar with a name that makes you do a double take. The cocktails are seasonal, so the menu changes, but everything I tried was well-balanced. They also have the classics, and they make a mean old fashioned. The patio out back is pleasant, with enough shade to keep it comfortable. Service was top-tier, attentive and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is lively but not chaotic, easy to have a conversation. If you're in the mood for a well-crafted drink in a relaxed setting, stop by.

Cleveland Draft House is a solid bet if you're after a cold beer and a decent bite. The draft list is extensive, so you'll find something even if you're picky. Buffalo chicken tenders are priced right and come out crispy, with just enough heat. There are pool tables in the back, and they rent by the hour, which is fair. Service was attentive without hovering. I'd come back for the beer selection alone. It's not fancy, but it does what it sets out to do. Bring friends and make an afternoon of it.

The Clayton Magnolia Inn feels like a step back in time, but in the best way. The rooms are spotless, and the décor has that old-fashioned charm that's hard to find now. Breakfast is made to order each morning, and the owner makes a point to remember your preferences. There are little touches, like fresh flowers and handwritten notes, that make it feel personal. The atmosphere is quiet and romantic, ideal for a getaway. I left feeling rested and genuinely cared for. If you want a place with character, this is it.
