I stopped by MJs Smoke and Grill on a Tuesday afternoon, mostly because I was hungry and out of better ideas. The staff greeted me like I was a regular, which I appreciated since I forgot my own name twice that week. The food came out fast and hot. I ordered the seasoned wings and a chili burger. Both were solid. Portions are big enough that I felt personally attacked by my plate. The banana pudding was the real winner. Sweet, creamy, and gone in about ninety seconds. GANGNAM KOREAN BBQ + HOTPOT is not traditional barbecue, but I am not traditional either, so we matched. You cook your own meal, which sounds like work but turns out to be fun. Our server Frank was attentive without hovering, which is a skill I admire and do not possess. The hotpot setup is straightforward and satisfying. The atmosphere stayed calm despite the sizzling. It is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. I left full and slightly impressed with myself for not burning anything. If you like interactive dining, this is worthwhile. Just do not expect pulled pork, because you will be disappointed, and that is on you.

Bar-B-Que Hut has been around since the fifties, and it shows in the best way. The place is old-school, meaning no nonsense and no pretense. I walked in, ordered the chopped pork, and had it in my hands before I could find a seat. The pork is authentic Eastern NC style, vinegar forward and properly cooked. The staff is friendly and quick. The dining area is clean. They refill your drink without being asked, which is a small miracle in my experience. Nothing fancy about it, but I would rather have this than some overpriced brisket in a downtown loft. Fast, fresh, and honest. I have no complaints. That is rare for me.

Gaston Brewing Restaurant is technically a barbecue stop on my list, but the bacon jam burger is the reason I would cross town. I ordered it because the menu said bacon jam, and I have no willpower. The burger was excellent. The jalapeno popper eggrolls were a surprise, creamy and spicy, and I ate too many. The beer and liquor selection is impressive, but I stayed with one because I had to drive home and write notes. The place has a brewery vibe without being loud or annoying. Service was fine. I left happy, full, and slightly concerned about my cholesterol. I will be back. The burger will be waiting.

This is the best I have had in Fayetteville, and I will fight anyone who disagrees, though I will lose because I do not exercise. Smithfield's Chicken 'N Bar-B-Q is a chain, but I do not hold that against it. The bathrooms and dining area were spotless, which is more than I can say for my own kitchen. The staff was friendly and helpful, even when I asked for extra pickles like a child. The fried chicken is excellent, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The sweet tea is the best I have had in town, and I say that as someone who usually thinks sweet tea is just sugar water with leaves. The drive-thru service was quick. I left with a full stomach and a clean conscience. That is a good combination.

Haymount Truck Stop is less of a barbecue place and more of a food truck gathering spot with cold beer. I appreciate that flexibility. I sat outside with my dog, who was welcome, and drank a cold beer while the sun did its best to melt me. The service was fast. There is a game room now, which I did not use because I am bad at games, but it looked fun. Multiple food trucks rotate through, so I tried something that was not barbecue, but I will not name it because I do not want to mislead you. If you want variety and a relaxed vibe, this works. Just do not expect one consistent menu. I did not mind. My dog did not either.

Archway Burgers, Dogs, And Beer sounds like a place that does not care about trends, and I respect that. I ordered a smash burger because I read the words 'smash burger' and lost control. The bun was toasted, the chili was homemade, and the whole thing was bigger than my head. Prices are crazy reasonable for the portions, which I did not believe until I saw the plate. The fries were great. The staff was friendly even though I dropped a fry on the floor and then ate it anyway. Vibe Gastropub has a name that makes me uncomfortable because I do not have a vibe, but I went anyway. The staff is warm and welcoming, which helped my social anxiety. MISSION BBQ is a patriotic experience, and I say that without irony. The place is covered in military memorabilia, and the staff says 'thank you for your service' to everyone, which includes me, and I have never served. I let it slide. The three-meat plate is the way to go. I got brisket, pulled pork, and turkey, and all three were solid. There are multiple sauces on the table, which is good because I like options and bad because I have no self-control. The place is clean and organized, a well-run operation. It is not the most authentic barbecue I have had, but it is consistent. I would go back. I probably will.

Fuller's Old Fashion BBQ disappointed me, and I am not sure why I keep expecting more. The dessert impressed a friend I brought, but the rest of the meal fell short of my Southern expectations. The cornbread and biscuits were decent, but decent is not what I want when I am paying for barbecue. The service staff was consistently friendly, which I appreciated, but the interior is dated, and the ketchup bottles looked like they had survived a war. I wanted to like it more. I really did. But the food did not match the hospitality. I might give it another shot, but there are too many better options in Fayetteville to settle for mediocre.

Southern Coals Restaurant has good pork, and I will give them that. The pork earns high marks, cooked well and seasoned properly. But the sides disappointed me, which is a shame because I like sides more than most people like their children. The bigger issue was the service. It stopped after I ordered. My table was not cleared, and the staff seemed to disappear. I felt like I was in a ghost kitchen. I had to wave down someone for a refill, and I hate doing that. The pork was good enough that I might go back, but I am not sure I want to. Good food cannot fix neglect.
